Amid family strife and a thirst for revenge, could the worst be yet to come in “Un si grand soleil”? Smadi Wolfman, who plays the ruthless Catherine Laumière, opened up to Allociné about the future of her character.
Since her dramatic entrance in “Un si grand soleil,” Catherine Laumière (Smadi Wolfman) has established herself as a formidable and feared figure.
A master manipulator, ambitious and power-hungry, Catherine has proven to be a significant adversary for the unyielding Élisabeth Bastide (Chrystelle Labaude). However, behind her relentless exterior, Catherine recently revealed a deep vulnerability following her husband’s death. This blend of iciness and human fragility makes her a character as complex as she is intriguing, captivating viewers with each episode.
But what do the writers of “Un si grand soleil” have in store for Catherine’s character?
Smadi Wolfman, the actress behind the fearsome Catherine Laumière, spoke to Allociné about what lies ahead for her character in the upcoming episodes of “Un si grand soleil.” Clearly, life is anything but calm for someone bearing the Laumière name.
Allociné: Looking back to the beginning of “Un si grand soleil,” what attracted you to the role of Catherine Laumière?
Smadi Wolfman: I wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew was that I needed to hold my own against Jérémie Covillault and Chrystelle Labaude. I thought, “Wow, this is cool.”
Then, I started to visualize Catherine. She really developed from the first arc with the power transfer between Catherine and François. I thought it would be challenging because I had to live up to the expectations of this father who was going to be killed. It was a bit of pressure but really enjoyable to act alongside Jérémie and create this family unit. Even though he’s gone, he’s still there in a way because he really set the tone for the Laumière family.

As the episodes progressed, Catherine has established herself as Elisabeth’s rival. Do you enjoy playing the villain of the series?
It’s incredibly satisfying to play the villain, and having a partner like Chrystelle Labaude is truly thrilling. She sets a high standard. When people on the street tell me, “I hate you!” I take it as a compliment. I dive deep into that because I find it very enjoyable.
What I also really like is that Catherine isn’t evil just for the sake of being evil. She always has a good reason. Family is an incredibly important value to her; it’s deeply ingrained. Catherine has a lot of love, and that’s what interests me about this character. Through her, I can really explore depth. It’s a real gift.
Catherine entered the series as a strong woman with lots of character. With François’s death, we’ve seen a more fragile and human side of your character. Do you like taking Catherine in this new direction?
Since I didn’t have much information about the character initially, I built a whole story, a family dynasty, a rivalry between Catherine’s father and Elisabeth’s father. I really dug deep. And actually, I love it because the more the plots build, the more I find justifications for my backstory.
What is Catherine’s mindset since returning from the hospital?
She’s even more eager to live, to take control, to reign and to conquer everything. She really wants to take her place, especially feeling like she wasted time in that rest home. She’s even more eager to reclaim her possessions. That’s exactly what will happen with Elisabeth, who will play a dirty trick on her.

They definitely are not stopping anytime soon.
What can we expect between Catherine, Boris, and Laurine?
The roles will evolve and shift a bit. Catherine and Laurine will grow closer while Boris, who has been a mama’s boy, will need to assert himself. It’s not necessarily going to go well between them. Catherine might even end up believing that her son has betrayed her.
On the romantic front, could Catherine find love in upcoming episodes?
Nothing planned on that front for now.
